     Common Sense--By Kenny Weldon

HECTOR CAMACHO & CHRISTY MARTIN AT RELIANT

Boxing fans in Houston ,Texas were witness to an outstanding boxing show July 18th at Reliant Arena featuring two former world champions. Hector and Christy Martin, are both Hall of Famers and both proved themselves to be worthy of the high praise they have been given by boxing fans around the world. Extremely bad judges and an overzealous security group at one of Houston's premier sports complexes once again leaves a nasty taste in many fans' mouths. Both Hall of Fame boxers leave Houston with a bad taste in their mouths as well. For many years Houston has been renowned around the country for bad decisions and roughhousing security.

Christy Martin first and foremost, beat her opponent 6 out of 8 rounds in a great fight with the tough and aggressive Valerie “The Wolfe “Mahfood, resulting in a controversial draw verdict from the local judges, and causing the large crowd to “Booo” for several minutes. Christy was furious and said she would never come back to Houston. I don’t believe anyone there other than The Wolfes family could blame Christy Martin. Even Mahfood said in the ring Christy had won.

Up until that bout, there had been other great action in the prelim bouts, which were the results of great matchmaking by Bill Benton. John “The Lion” Rarden soundly defeated Derrick Moon in a heated battle of boxers who averaged about 80-90 punches per round with no quit in either of them, resulting in Rarden winning a unanimous decision over the Dallas veteran. With two other slugfests, prior to the Rarden and Christy Martin bouts and a couple of MMA bouts, here comes Macho Camacho, wearing his “glammer-slammer” outfit he has been known to wear throughout his illustrious boxing career. Then, entering the ring with Angelo Dundee, considered by most boxing fans to be the greatest trainer in history as chief trainer for Muhammad Ali. What a sight for older boxing fans and younger fans alike. Promoter John English had succeeded in doing what he said he would do...bring world class boxing to Houston, Texas. Camacho’s opponent though was determined to destroy Camacho any way he could, rushing out of his corner and intentionally butting Hector on the top of the head. I guess he did not realize that the best fighters in the world for twenty years tried the same, only to end up the same way he was going to end up, on the loser's end of a title fight. The guy tried every dirty tactic he could, with Camacho remaining calm and beating knots on his opponent's head and body until the champ's corner had had enough. The guy who was now "former champion" looked as though he had been through a meat grinder and he said he had had enough of Houston, saying he would not even drive his car through here again.

John English and his wife Donna had a lot of class bringing this show to Houston. I wish the security at the arena did the same but instead they caused a scene, arresting Hector Camacho’s uncle. But hey, I write boxing here, not politics…

God bless,
